The bucket guidance surfaced in a documentgiven to teachers at the start of the year at Great Yarmouth Charter academy, after the struggling school was taken over by the Norwich-based InspirationTrust.

The EasternDaily News reported that the document distributed by Barry Smith, theschool’s new headteacher, listed a series of rules and practices that teachersand pupils were to follow – including the suggestion that pupils be offered abucket if they said they felt ill in class.

“We all know children say things like thatto get out of work. You never pretend to be ill to get out of work because weexpect you to work through it. If you feel sick we will give you a bucket. Ifyou vomit – no problem! You’ve got your bucket. That’s probably all your bodywanted – to vomit. If you are really ill we will make sure you get all theattention you need,” the document said.

Inspiration Trust said the inductiondocument was only meant to be circulated to staff internally, and the schoolissued a clarified behaviour guide for pupils and parents this week.

Under “sickness and absence” the revisedrules state: “Pupils may sometimes pretend to be ill to avoid classes they donot like, and teachers will make a judgment call as to whether a pupil isgenuinely unwell.

“Where a pupil is genuinely unwell theschool will make arrangements for their care, and will contact parents ifappropriate.”

The revised rules also soften otherpunitive measures contained in the earlier document, including a threat toconfiscate any mobile phones seen during school hours.

They include advice to pupils to be in bedby 9.30pm on school nights, after they have checked the contents of theirpencil cases “to make sure you have three black pens that work, two sharppencils and a 30cm ruler. You don’t need anything else in your pencil case”.

In a letterto parents this week, Smith described “a great deal of rumour and speculationon social media” over the new rules, and offered to hold a parents’ meeting atthe school on Thursday.

Formerly known as Great Yarmouth highschool, the school was taken over and renamed by Inspiration Trust in Augustafter several years of poor exam results and being rated as inadequate byOfsted.

Ofsted inspectors visiting the school foundthat many lessons were disrupted by misbehaviour.

“Pupils told inspectors that all of theirlessons in some subjects are disrupted by the behaviour of a small number ofpupils. In lessons, inspectors observed pupils openly defying teachers, answering back, refusing to work and leaving classrooms when they chose to.Pupils told inspectors that this was typical,” the report stated.

A follow up visit by inspectiors late lastyear found that “the school’s culture of behaviour and promotion of a safeenvironment for pupils remains inadequate”.

Critics say they unfairly penalise pupilsfor minor deviations.

Inspiration Trust said the initial responsefrom parents and pupils to the new rules had been positive.

Perhaps you didn't have both parents working and sending the kids to school ascheap childcare. Loads of kids vomit in class because they are sent to schoolill and then look for the teacher to clean it up. On the old wooden floors ortiles it was fairly easy but most classrooms are carpeted for acoustic reasonsnowadays and the smell lingers for days.

You don't "know", you "suspect" and you "assume".Professionals make mistakes all the time so I have no idea why you think thatmakes anybody want to trust you to make decisions you are not qualified to - ifyou were looking after our (not YOUR) children, I would expect you to err onthe side of caution and operate on the basis that they are not lying, whateveryour suspicions may be.

We never had a school nurse in my day. We just went to the school office andthe secretary contacted our parents. I always found that eating soap workedvery well to make one look and feel ill, just for long enough to get sent homeof course.

My mate John once borrowed a bit of someone else vomit and blagged a day offschool with it when we were in primary school...

As a retired head and teacher for more than 30 years, I do not believe this'Inspiration Trust' should be allowed anywhere near schools and children.

I always had a bucket for vomit in my class because with 7 year old kids theyhave a tendency to throw up without much warning and it isn't always possibleto get them out of the room in time.
As for the 'sent home' business, that's a laugh. Most parents are working andrefuse to come and get their puking offspring. I remember one child throwing upall day and admitting they had been sick all night too but 'mum was decorating'and didn't want her in the house. The school office spent all day trying tocontact her parents without any luck. When mum arrived half an hour late topick the child up, reeking of paint, she blatantly said she had been out allday and her child had been fine before school. I threatened her with socialservices (neglect and refusal to put the welfare of her child first) if it everhappened again but she didn't seem overly concerned.
Personally I think a sick bucket is a good idea, then get the child home oncethey 'produce the goods'.

"Teachers will make a judgement call as to whether a pupil is genuinelyunwell". What could possibly go wrong with that? If they were qualified tomake that call they would be working as doctors, not teachers. It would be adamn foolish teacher who didn't just inform us and/or seek medical assistanceif our kids told them they were unwell! I'm not against teachers enforcingreasonable school rules, but this is not reasonable - it is actively dangerous. It is better that a thousand kids get to wag class than one gets disbelievedwhen they are genuinely unwell.

What is it about nuns and violent discipline?
Iknow several people who were "brought up" by nuns in a children'shome, run by a convent. The stories they tell include some absolutely horrifictales of violent punishment for really minor infringements.

I once took a child on a school trip, who suddenly started vomiting. I had toreturn with him via public transport to meet his mum, who took him to thedoctor, who sent him straight to A&E, as his appendix was about to burst. Ishould've passed him a sick bucket, though, shouldn't I?

I don't want a kid puking in my class - partly because it would make me be sick(and possibly half the class) , but also because I don't want the justifiedoutrage from their parents when they hear I was told their child was feelingsick and I said well unless you puke I don't believe you.

They should be sent to the school nurse. If, as you say they may be seriouslyill, they need to see a health professional ASAP.

No, it isn't like that at all.
Strict rules make sense in schools, otherwise they would be play-schools, andnot real schools.
And the strict rules are understood by all reasonably bright children to belimited to one's school years, after which one decides for oneself which rulesare appropriate and which are not.
The existence of strict rules does not turn out robots unless the ability tothink is lacking, and most of the many, many children I have taught were ableto think pretty well for themselves.
The rules only set the boundaries for what is permissible in school.
Every child knows that there is a life outside school.

If my child were feigning sickness in order to disrupt the learning of others Iwould expect tough love to be applied.

So long as they teach my son how to conjugate verbs when using plural nouns,I'm happy.

well how far is it to the toilets? Generally, too far away. If you're going tothrow up, that's what you're going to do. And, as I recall, throwing up inclass or the corridor, was quite embarrassing. Not something you'd go out ofyour way to do. But, the experience isn't complete without the smell of theCaretakers sawdust mixing with the smell of child vomit.

No way. I don't want some random teacher who I've probably never met hitting mychild, even if they are disobedient. I'm all for discipline- detentions, phonebans, exclusion from nice activities, even the isolation room or suspension/exclusion if really necessary ( yes, even for my own children), but beatingthem? No no no

"You feel sick, do you? Well, here's a bucket. Now, on with yourmaths" is perfectly reasonable tough love. Until it's your child.

Hey teacher! Leave those kids alone....

Whats wrong with that? Sounds good sense to me. I think school kids shouldbring their own bed rolls as well, for when they feel sick and I definitelythink school meals should be stopped - that'd reduce the sickness rate overnight. All good sense. I also think children should bring their Mum's to schoolso they can have a cuddle when they've been sick. The head of the school issoulless.
