The brief honeymoon between the world’s two largest economies appears to be over.

Three months ago President Donald Trump had warm words for his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping after the two leaders bonded at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Within weeks the Trump administration was touting early wins in talks with China including more access for U.S. beef and financial services as well as help in trying to rein in North Korea.

Now the two sides can barely agree how to describe their disagreements.

High-level economic talks in Washington broke up Wednesday with the two superpowers unable to produce a joint statement. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross scolded China over its trade imbalance with the U.S. in his opening remarks and then both sides canceled a planned closing news conference.

Both sides later made separate statements following the talks. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Ross said China "acknowledged our shared obxtive to reduce the trade deficit which both sides will work cooperatively to achieve." China’s foreign ministry issued a reciprocal statement saying both sides agree to start "constructive cooperation" to narrow the trade gap.

Clickbait

This is only the first of many meetings ahead.

Fojar38

China is no superpower.

LeYanYanFrance

They aren't anyone to ignore too.

Fojar38

Depends on where in the world we're talking about. They can't be ignored in East Asia but anywhere else? Sure.

LeYanYanFrance

Nah man it's like half of our stuff are made here they can't be ignored.

Fojar38

We can get other people to make stuff. They can't get other people to buy theirs.

BlazeMiskulin

I don't think you grasp just how difficult that would be--and how devastating the change would be.

If China chose to shut down all foreign companies inside their borders (something that is within their power to do) you would have entire industries (such as automotive) at a standstill. China may not produce all the parts for cars but they produce enough of them that you can't build cars without them. It's thinks like electronic door locks gaskets steering-fluid reservoirs vent louvers and seatbelt tensioning springs.

To start making those elsewhere could take years. Ignoring the massive loss of capital (which would have a debilitating effect on the ability start up elsewhere) there's the planning negotiation government approvals construction restocking of molds finding new suppliers logistics purchasing of capital equipment... Setting up a new factory isn't like moving into a new apartment.

BuckwheatDeAngelo

I agree with you here but it's also important to point out that this would devastate China.

Fojar38

The difference here is that those things could be made elsewhere. The West can move production elsewhere or even back home and after some time has passed and supply chains have reorganized themselves things would be back to normal.

China on the other hand would be completely and utterly fucked. It's economy would shrink by trillions and it would not be able to replace its former customers.

Buyers have more power in a relationship than sellers do especially if the seller is offering things that can be acquired anywhere.

But none of this matters because it doesn't make China a superpower just because people listen to them. People always listened to them. People listen to North Korea.

Deceptichum

They quite clearly are...

Fojar38

They quite clearly aren't. China is a regional power that doesn't come anywhere even close to the USA or even the EU in terms of global influence and presence.

Deceptichum

Mate they exert their influence from Asia to Africa.

You might not like it but they're a super power.

Fojar38

In 2017 most countries have "influence" on multiple continents from great powers to middle powers. That's a shit metric for what constitutes "superpower."

dazzazhonggua

They're an economic power. They're not yet considered a military power and they little or no soft power.

Everyone and their mother has been a colonist in Africa. China's just the latest.

China around the world is largely irrelevant. I don't know where you're from but no one gives a shit about China in the European unx. They really couldn't care less.

Deceptichum

No one gives a shit about the EU in Australia either.

I'm not acting like China is a hyperpower but to think they're only regional is ridiculous. They clearly exert more power than most nations even you Euros seem to kowtow to them often enough.

Fojar38

You keep on saying it's "clear" and "obvious." Maybe from Australia but to people who aren't in the region China's influence isn't any greater than any other powers. The only country who has broad spectrum influence both hard and soft that is projected to a global scale is the United States.

Fucking France has greater power projection abilities and soft power than China does.

dazzazhonggua

I said economic power. Yes we're all a bit pathetic because they make shit for us.

Like begging your subordinate not to quit because you don't know anyone better at the job.

So... economic no?

Although they'll start to exert real influence over Australia that should terrify you.

The US is the only real superpower however diminishing that might be

Fojar38

It's not diminishing. In terms of relative power America's lead is actually increasing again.

hostilewesternforces

Not from where I'm standing.

Maybe the author is from Burma or something?
